New year is always a good time to reflect on the past and think about the future. Here’s our thoughts on us as a company and where we see ourselves going over the coming 12 months.
What a history!
Kittle Associates Ltd was born on 18 December 2014 as a single freelance bid writer. That was how things were intended to stay but not how they were meant to be! Having developed a reputation for quality, delivery and commitment, work just kept coming in to the point where it was time to turn it away or grow. Growth was our choice. 27 months later, we now have a team of nine employed staff and support from a small pool of associate writers.
We are not the only bid writing consultancy in the market. So, what has created this growth? In a nutshell, we strove to be the best. There is nothing radical about what we do – you will find it in any good business management book – but we committed to put into practice what we know to be the right approach. It has taken energy and time but a decision that has paid off.
Commitment to our writers
Most of our competitors predominantly rely on freelance writers. While this arguably offers greater security to a business – particularly at periods of lower activity – we have taken a fundamentally different approach. Our strategy is to commit to those who are the best in the market by employing them, offering security for the future and a stake in our business. While there are some good writers out there, we make no apologies for only employing the best. We do not just rely on CVs and a quick telephone call. Rather we use a rigorous selection process, including writing assessments, to identify those who will benefit our clients’ businesses. In turn, our clients get to know our writers and appreciate what they bring to growing their services.
Investment in our people
Training is incredibly important for us to provide consistency of approach and an overall more reliable service for clients. It also sends a clear signal that we invest time and money to be the best in the market. Even our pool of freelance writers, who help us manage peaks in demand, benefit from our in-house training programme as we treat them as one of the family. In return, we drive up standards and motivate them to commit to us when we most need them.
Hard work and double the fun
There is no doubt that we require the highest of standards and commitment from our people. At the same time, experience shows staff perform at their best if they look forward to coming to work. We have therefore deliberately designed the way we use our offices to offer a fun and relaxed environment. Regular events create a close-knit team, help staff get to know each other in and outside of work and turn colleagues into friends.
Building long-term relationships
We want long-term relationships with clients that benefit both parties. This allows us to get to know their businesses better and develop knowledge and experience of how they operate. Over time, it also helps us to reduce unit costs, as we have the library of information and case studies to hand that can be used to evidence bids and prepare their tenders more quickly. Where we have transformed clients’ businesses and helped them to grow, we love to celebrate their success. In turn, we have benefited from a strong client base who are committed to us and return time and time again, for which we are incredibly grateful. The client-supplier relationship has therefore become one of partnership.
We are always realistic in how we sell our services. Given there are so many variables outside of our control in how bids are evaluated, we cannot promise all our hard work will win. However, clients know that when they commission us, they significantly increase their chances of securing that new contract as we use techniques that have shown time and time again to be effective. They also know we give everything to ensure their bid is the best we can produce and of the highest quality.
Bidding requires flexibility. There is no doubt about that! Every tender is different as is every client. We therefore have to tailor our approach to work with clients and meet each bid’s needs. That means working to support internal governance, understanding each client’s expectations, and – as was recently the case with a client in New Zealand – occasionally having to change the working day to fit around diaries (or time zones!). The benefit of this is a reputation where we can integrate very quickly into a business, almost as one of the team.
Focussing on quality
Quality is incredibly important to us and is something on which we will not compromise. We have therefore developed processes that only a team of committed individuals who work closely together all the time can implement. This avoids diluting our offer that an over-reliance on freelancers could bring and allows us to apply consistency each and every time. Achieving quality is more than just training and we have therefore invested time, effort and dedicated resource in assuring work before it goes out the door.
Looking to the future
So that’s our history and approach. What about the future?
The UK is full of uncertainty at the moment. As a Management Team, we are convinced that the future remains bright and we will make the most of every opportunity whatever happens over the coming years. Things may get harder at times, but that just means we will need to work smarter to compete in the world. We will therefore continue to invest and look for new ways to be different, stand out and grow our business as well as those of our clients wherever they may be.
For this reason, we have exciting projects under way and some incredible plans for 2019 and beyond. We are therefore on the lookout for new talent. So, whether you are an established bid writer or new to the industry we want to hear from you. All we ask is that you can evidence your writing skills, are driven to be the best and are committed to us and our clients.
At the same time, we are always interested in speaking to companies of whatever size who need support to win that next contract and grow their own business.
